Our approach

Trust and safety isn't a bolt-on moderation queue. It's designed into the product from the beginning. The 5-conversation cap, the report system, the values framework — all of these contribute to a community where people treat each other with care.

When things go wrong, we investigate. Every report is read by a human. We don't rely solely on automated systems to make decisions that affect real people.

How to report

You can submit a report from three places in the app:

  • Profile overflow menu — for reporting a user's profile, photos, or general behaviour.
  • Long-press on a message — to report a specific message in a conversation.
  • Photo tap menu — to report an inappropriate photo.

Report reasons

Inappropriate content

Explicit material, disturbing photos, or content that violates guidelines.

Harassment or unsafe behaviour

Threats, repeated unwanted contact, or making someone feel unsafe.

Fake or scam

Not who they say they are, impersonation, or attempting to deceive.

Soliciting

Advertising, escort services, or commercial activity.

Underage

Reasonable suspicion that the user is under 18.

Other

Something that doesn't fit the above — describe it and we'll review.

Reporter privacy

When you report someone, your identity is protected. We store a hashed identifier derived from your user ID — the reported person cannot discover who filed the report, and we don't display reporter identities to anyone.

Your hash is used to track your reporting history. If your reports are consistently upheld by our moderation team, your future reports are weighted accordingly. If reports are consistently found to be bad-faith, they're weighted less.

What happens after you report

  • Immediate: If you selected "Block", the reported user can no longer see your profile or contact you.
  • Within 24 hours: A human reviews your report alongside any related reports about the same user.
  • Outcome: We take action ranging from a warning, to a temporary suspension, to a permanent ban. For serious violations (underage accounts, threats, soliciting) the ban is immediate.
  • Repeat offenders: We maintain records of banned users to prevent them from creating new accounts.

We don't notify you of the specific outcome, to protect both parties. If you're worried about ongoing contact, use the block feature.

Proactive safety measures

Photo review

Profile photos are screened for explicit content and faces not matching the profile. This happens before photos go live.

5-conversation cap

Limiting active conversations reduces volume-based harassment patterns. If you're at 5 active conversations, you need to archive one before starting another — this encourages real engagement over mass-messaging.

Account verification

We offer optional identity verification. Verified accounts are marked with a badge; it signals that we've confirmed the person is who they say they are.

Soft delete with review period

Deleted accounts are held in a soft-delete state for 30 days before data is purged. This ensures banned users cannot immediately recreate accounts and that there's a window to address appeals.

Emergency situations

If you are in immediate danger, contact emergency services first. We are not a real-time response service. For genuine safety emergencies: call 112 (Europe), 999 (UK), or 911 (US/Canada).

For non-emergency safety concerns about another user, email trust@jarta.app. We respond within 24 hours.
